Immigration - Due 2-27

After small group discussion the other day, your last assignment was to come up with a solution to an area surrounding the immigration issues covered in class.  Describe your thoughts and what viable option/options YOU see for down the road.

I was in a small group with Kelsey, Taylor, Autumn, Shelby and Katie. We decided that it takes too long for immigrants to become citizens. The long process may cause them to get frustrated and come to the U.S. anyway. Our group thinks that the process to become a legal citizen should be simpler and shorter, that is if we want to bring more people into the country. We want it to be easier for immigrants to legally become part of the United States. It would be good to have an upgrade of the system that allows these individuals to become part of our country.

Like Mary stated above, our group had talked about making the legalization process more simplified. I thought that maybe there could be the possibility of shortening the 13 year wait. I think this would be a good way to make the legalization process simpler. However, I also know that the reason the wait is so long is because of the back logs from many years ago. Therefore, I know that changing the legalization process is something that cannot be fixed overnight it would take a lot of work. My opinion is that we should slowly work towards changing the legalization process to where it is easier to make an immigrant a legal American. If we change this I believe that it could be a stepping stone for more immigrants to become legal.

I was in a small group with Matt, Shaely, Erin, Daniel, and myself. We, as a group came up with a solution to tax any illegal immigrants. If they want to work in America, that's fine, but they deserved to have stipulations put on them. We also discussed and came up with a solution to tax the employers as well. We felt as a group that it is their job to do background checks on everybody they hire and that they should be held accountable for hiring illegals and get punished as well. As for myself, I completely agree with what our group discussed. Every person is human and deserves the right to earn for their living; however, I feel that you should be legal in order to receive full benefits like legal citizens do.

Like Mary and Kelsey said, our group discussed the long waiting time that immigrants face before they can become legal citizens. The fact that immigrants have to wait that long to become a citizen is ridiculous. It seems that it is the individuals who come over here illegally that cause all of the issues, so it would only make sense to lessen the wait and make it easier for them to become legal citizens. I have a feeling this would probably be a lot of work, and like Kelsey said would take a very long time, but if everyone thinks it needs done then they will probably put the time into it to get it fixed.

For one thing I do not think we should just give them citizenship like Obama did. They should have to do something to get it. It is too bad that the process is so long to become a legal citizen. Maybe if that was shorter, we wouldn't have so many illegals coming over. Even if this process to become legal was shorter though, there would still be people that tried to come over. I think people hiring should do back ground checks on who they are hiring, and if they are illegal do not hire them. We should be hiring American citizens. Some of these illegals should be deported, and if not that, they should have to work to get their citizenship.

Undocumented immigrants can be very bad for the economy because immigrants tend to work for less money. Congress needs immigration reform so we can control the people that come into the U.S. If we keep letting undocumented workers in they will make the U. S. weak. When the U.S. becomes weak the undocumented workers could go back to where they came from and we are stuck with a weak economy. What I think we should do is crack down on the southern border and deport any undocumented worker immediately. The children born in the United States should have to go back with their parents if their parents are illegal.

Kyle F said...

I would have to agree with Lucas. They can escape the bad economy and move on to new places like they weren’t even here. If immigrants want to come here they need to be documented. Employers need to do a background check to make sure people are okay to hire. If they aren’t legal, they need to be turned in, so they can become legal or be deported. If they come illegally, they won’t get the same rights as an immigrant coming legally. Same thing if they have a kid born here, the parents won’t have the rights like others but I think the kid should have the rights as others. If the parents are deported, they will have to take their kid with them because they are too young to stay.

I feel there should be other ways to get into the U.S. legally for people from Mexico that will help lower down the amount of illegal immigrant in the U.S.. I feel if a baby is born and that the parents are illegal the family should deported back. When the child is old enough like 18, they have a choice rather not to go back to the U.S., but they choose to they must show some documents of the proof of being born here in the U.S.

In the group I was in, we were talking about putting stipulations on current illegal immigrants. Similar to residents in Puerto Rico, illegal immigrants would be allowed to stay in the US (avoiding deportation costs and the possibility of re-immigrating), but they would not have all of the rights American citizens do. They would be protected under the Constitution, but they would not be able to do things like voting and they could even have to pay some sort of "living tax" that normal citizens don't have to pay. This could also serve to deter others from illegally coming to America because of these provisions. For this to happen, though, efforts to find illegal immigrants would need to be better financed and practiced.

I do not think that any person that comes to the United States, or any country illegally, deserves to become a citizen. If I could suggest a policy to help end illegal immigration, I would set up a two-strike policy. If someone is caught illegally here the first time, he/she is deported. The second time, they are in jail. This may seem unfair and immoral, but if they truly want to be in the United States, they should go through the proper channels to do so. Children who are born here by illegal immigrants will be deported with the parents, but given dual citizenship. Once the child turns 18, they may choose whether to stay where they are or go to the United States. In an ideal world, this would work. Sadly, we do not live in an ideal world, and therefore there is no viable option.

Brianna M. said...

I don't think that even if the process is shorter, or easier to become a legal citizen of the United States that most of the illegals here would do it anywhere. There are probably other reasons already that they have that they haven't already applied to a citizen. Since they broke the law entering the US illegal, they don't deserve amnesty for that. They deserve to be sent back. I don't think the US needs to be mr. nice guy all the time trying to make everything better all the time. Sometimes people need to grow up and take care of themselves and do things the right way.

Megan W. said...

I think whatever kind of way we think of to eliminate illegal immigrants, some will always go the quick and illegal way. But, shortening the process would be a little helpful. Our group also thought of putting stipulations on the illegal immigrants. They wouldn't have all the rights that American citizens do right now. They would have to pay some kind of tax that American's do not have to pay. They wouldn't be able to vote and they would have to graduate from high school to become legal. We would only be able to do this if we find a better way of finding the illegal immigrants and put effort into it.

April E. said...

I think the solution to immigration issue is a complicated. There would need to be stronger boarder control to stop the illegal immigration. The process of becoming a United State citizen should be shorter. More immigration offices should be opened to cut down on the long waiting lines. (If there would be more offices and more border control this would also open up jobs for American workers.) A correction needs to be made about "Anchor Babies". I think that one parent must be a citizen or applying for citizenship in order for the offspring to be an American Citizen. If neither parent is a citizen or applying then the baby must be deported with the parents.

Mariah M. said...

I do not think that there is an easy answer in how to solve immigration. First off, I think that it is a very long and complicated process for someone from another country to become a legal citizen in the United States. Because of this it causes them to just come over illegally and avoid the mess of the system. I think that if this process was shorter and easier we wouldn't have so many illegal immigrants. Also in our small group we also talked about that the reason that immigrants come is to find jobs and better work. They often do the jobs that American do not want to do. If Americans would fill these jobs it wouldn't be a problem. We have many people in the United States living off a government and I think that these kinds of jobs would be a great place for them to start working again. As job opportunities lessened, less immigrants would want to come because they would know that they would be unable to find work.

Cole G. said...

The issue of immigration is extremely complicated. Some people just want to get all the undocumented immigrants out, and others want to make them citizens. I think a mix of the two ideologies is in order. We need to tighten down border control to attempt to stop undocumented immigration. While we are stopping the inflow of undocumented immigrants, we should be finding ways to document those already here. There should be protocols set so those undocumented workers arrested for felonies should be deported. One of the most important things to address is the ridiculous waiting time for legal immigration. If it was easier to immigrate to the U.S. through legal channels, there would be less undocumented immigration.

Shelby W. said...

As Mary said before, we decided it is to long of a process for immigrants to become citizens. To become a legal citizen, should be simpler and shorter. If we do this, we should have more legal immigrants, rather than illegal. It would definitely take a long time to fix and a lot of work. If we slowly work towards a better process, we might be able to help the immigration process.

Stephanie B. said...

I think the whole immigration legalization process is too lengthy. Most immigrants don't want to wait that long to become legalized, so they come to the US undocumented. As we discussed in our small groups last week, we thought that if the lazy American's would go and get a job, the immigrants wouldn't have a need to find jobs. I think that the US should make the legalization processes easier and less time consuming for those who want citizenship. I also think that if they can't make the legalization process simpler, then we need better border control for those who attempt to cross. What the U.S. really needs to do is put some kind of stipulations towards the immigrants who come to the U.S. illegally.

Blaine F. said...

I have to agree with April. In the smaller groups we were in, I was in hers and we all came up with that solution. I like the thing about "Anchor Babies", if they're going to have kids here, they should at least be applying for citizenship.

I think that if any illegal immigrants are caught doing something illegal then they should be deported. I don’t believe that they should go to businesses and deport the ones that are working. The other thing about deporting them it gives more people jobs in the border control and law enforcement. I do not believe we should hold criminals that are illegal in our jail because of how much it costs. As far as the anchor babies go I think that if there is a baby that has one parent from the U.S then the one parent can stay with that parent and deport the other. I believe that if the baby has two illegal immigrants for parents then both parents and baby get shipped back.

Keilidh Hicks said...

Okay, first off, I'm going to state that most people are not going to agree with me. My group and I talked about how undocumented immigrants should just be shipped back to where they immigrated from. I disagree in several ways. Some people don't understand that some of those immigrants are escaping from persecution because of beliefs. That doesn't happen as often in the United States. I agree with several others, like Mary and Kelsey, that the legalization process needs to be simplified. Not only that, when recreating the process, one thing that should be thought about is the fact that most immigrants are unable to get the $400 to $600 dollars to pay for the filing and processing of the paperwork you are told to fill out. I know that even with my dad working, we can't afford to pay for that, as well as paying to provide the legal documentation proving you are a citizen of whatever country you moved from. For me, it would cost near $200.

If we spent more money building towers every two miles along the border and brought all of our troops back to the United States, it would prevent immigration. We could make those towers bulletproof and have two men per tower with high powered rifles. If anybody attempts to cross, the United States would have the right to protect our country with a warning shot. They could also use some kind of electric wall, that doesn't kill them, but just scares them. There could also be a new form of passport so that the old ones would be invalid. It would be harder to copy it by having some sort of secret code or something that you could only see on the type of paper they use, like the face on a dollar bill when you hold it up to the light.

Samantha G. said...

I was in a group with Keilidh, Cameron S. and Dalton. We did not come up with a specific way to solve immigration problems. I do believe that tighter security on the borders would improve the illegals or undocumented immigrants from entering to the U.S. I also agree with Mary that the process is very long and it could be a reason that they could be coming to the country illegally to avoid all the paper work. Giving undocumented immigrants an opportunity to have a chance to stay here.

As a group we tried to target businesses and the immigrants themselves. We decided that we would crack down on businesses that hired illegal immigrants and raise taxes on them or punish them in some other way. We also planned on taxing illegal immigrants and making their lives hard so that they would have trouble and want to move back to their home country. I think this is an okay idea, but it is not a viable option. Honestly it is hard to think up a solution because it is too expensive to just deport everyone, but it isn't fair to just grant amnesty to lawbreakers. The best possible solution in sight is to put more effort into border control and try to weed out the undocumented citizens as best as we can. A possible solution could be to create a government agency dedicated specifically to border control, finding and deporting illegal immigrants, and promoting legal immigration.

Ben B. said...

If the Illegal immigrant gets caught, he or she should have the opportunity to become a citizen. If they refuse, deport them. If they become a legal citizen they should not have all the rights of citizens that were born in the U.S. They will also have to pay all of the taxes like everybody else.

Jonathan E. said...

I agree with cole as soon as the immigrant get arrested they should be deported back to their home country. If it costs so much more to put and keep them in jail than to send them back then why are we keeping them. People complain about so many immigrants in this country we just need to add more security to our borders and keep sending the ones back that we catch already here.

I believe that to help with the immigration problem, government should pressure companies and businesses to not hire anyone who does not provide legal information and proof of citizenship that the person should be turned away. Trying to stop immigrants from coming into the United States is a waste of money because, it will only make illegals want to come in more and more. Trying to deport illegals is also too expensive. So pressuring them by putting a fine on businesses who hire illegals. Come with a specific type of document that will prove their citizenship or send them on their way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

I was in a group with a few other people and we discussed what the viable options could be for this situation. We decided that it would be best to have a situation similar to that of Puerto Rico. The illegal immigrants would be able to stay in the United States, but would have limited rights. They would not be able to vote, and have no representation in Congress. If they had a child here, they would also have to put their child through school, and have them graduate before they were considered citizens

We should strengthen the borders and enforce a two-strike rule. If they are caught once, then they are deported. If they are caught again, then they are sent to prison. The children born in america under illegal parents should be sent back with them but given dual-citizenship, that way, when they are of age, they czn choose to live in either Mexico or the United States.

Marcus M said...

I think that if an illegal gets caught, they should either have to take the road to legalization, or get deported. Even if they choose the road to become citizens, they will still have to pay the consequences for coming across illegally. Some people don't think that is morally right, but you can't please everyone.

Katie M. said...

As the members in my group stated above, the process of becoming a legal immigrant is way to long. Like Kelsey said, the legalization process needs to be shorter and more simplified. These immigrants do put a strain on the economy, so it would be smart to make their pathway to citizenship easier. I know this would be hard, and like Taylor and Kelsey said would take a very long time, but it is a problem that we need to do something about.

Danial F said...

My group and I decided that the best way to take care of this problem would be to document the illegal immigrants. When they get document they will never be eligible for citizenship and they would be taxed extra on all of their earnings. They would also be taxed and charged more for social services and housing. If we were able to do all of this it might encourage some of the illegals to go back to their own country and it may deter others from entering the United States.

Erin J. said...

As everyone else has stated, illegal immigration is a complicated situation. There are so many undocumented immigrants that come to the United States for opportunity. They come over illegally because of how long it takes to become a citizen. I think if they shorten the process of becoming a citizen, then more of the undocumented immigrants would put forth they effort to become a citizen than being undocumented. As for those that are already in the United States, because it is so expensive to deport them, I think we should let them stay. More than likely they are working and helping our economy in a way. If we were to get rid of all the illegal immigrants, some businesses may go under.

Autumn L said...

In my group, we decided that one of the major problems is the long process it takes for immigrants to become legal citizens. We think that if it became an easier process, they wouldn't come over here illegally. They would go through the process legally. Also, another way to keep illegal immigrants from coming here in the first place, we thought we should make it harder for illegal immigrants to get a job. If they can't find a job when they are an illegal, they will either go back home or begin the process of becoming a legal resident of the United States.

Caleb A said...

I think that the road to legalization for illegal immigrants should be shorter and easier. If they did this it would make a lot of immigrants to come to America the right way instead of coming illegally. If they are caught and choose not to do it the right way I think that they should be deported.

Cameron S. said...

I agree with Sams answers. That's what I think should happen. We just need more police to patrol the borders.
